Parke's Castle

Parke's Castle is fortified manor house of the early 1600s, picturesque located on the shores of Lough Gill, in County Leitrim. It was built by Captain Robert Parke during the times of plantations of Ireland. Before Parke's Castle was built here, there was 16th century fortress of O'Rourke family, strongest clan on this lands. Its last owner, Sir Brian O'Rourke was executed for high treason in 1591, in London. O'Rourke's lands were granted to Captain Parke and the tower house was destroyed completely. Its foundations of were discovered under the cobbles of the courtyard during the excavations of present castle. After Robert Parke died in 1671, the castle passed into the hands of his daughter Anne, who married Sir Francis Gore. Castle was abandoned in early 18th century and began to fall into disrepair. Anne and Francis's great grandson later built the Lissadell House, home of revolutionist Countess Constance Markievicz. After more than two centuries of decay, Parke's Castle eventually came into state ownership and was carefully restored by OPW in 1990's. Now is one of the most important tourist attractions in County Leitrim.
